New Year and Projectplace for iPhone BETA

Beginning a new blog post is a bit like the new year. Or the beginning of a new project. All that white page or time streching out in front of you.

New Year's is my favourite holiday of the year. There are many reasons for this, like champagne, friends, sparklies, and fireworks, but I think the main reason is that feeling of starting fresh. The summarising of the previous and the sense of adventure in not quite knowing what is going to happen next.

Exciting stuff is underway. On Monday we will take down Projectplace Ideas and upgrade the platform to a new and improved version. Hopefully this can be done over day and you should be able to use Projectplace Ideas as usual on Tuesday...

The new version of Projectplace for iPhone is out. This is a beta version and we would like to have as much feedback as possible. Post it in the iPhone category and i will make sure the labs team look at it.

Projectplace Ideas a year later - 8% have status implemented

Today, I have closed some of the ideas and bugs that were implemented and fixed in last night's release. I realised that it's been approximately a year since we launched Projectplace Ideas. So here are some statistics

Total no of users: 21,637
Total no of contributions: 2,817 (votes, comments and ideas)
Total no of ideas: 625
Percent of ideas implemented: 8%

It's been a fun year. A lot of internal processes have had to be fine tuned and in some cases even reinvented. I feel confident that we will see a higher rate of ideas implemented next year.

I'm now looking forward to mid January, when we release a new version of Projectplace Ideas. It will look better but most importantly be easier to use and contain even more information for you.

Projectplace for iPhone - New Labs Edition Teaser

The Projectplace Labs Crew have done it again. There's a new app for the iPhone! Out in a special Labs Edition in an app store near you sometime soon...

I'm testing it out and I think it's great! Here are some of the things I love about the new app:

Increased collaboration: a personal guestbook - or wall - and a pm/chat function. Also all your contacts (other members in your projects) are in here, with a special section for your favourites.

Notification You get a ping for everything that happens in the app, when something is assigned to you, when someone writes in your guestbook. And with this version you can also choose to follow individual documents in projectplace. Then you get notifications whenever something happens to that document.

And the notification list is wonderful, like a mini history of the things I need to know about in my projects.

The Interface is nice and clean, I especially like the red star for favourites...

Of course there are still some things that could be improved...and a few bugs to get rid of. All in all though, I have to say that for me it's already hard to understand how I could do without this app.

It looks like it might come out in the app store soon-ish ... maybe even in the next couple of weeks. When it does we will ask for feedback, as much as possible, on Projectplace Ideas.

Oh, while I'm in the process of teasing you, here are some more screen shots from the new app:

Quality Meeting Postponed

Ah well, these things happen....Now booked for Monday instead. Gives you the weekend to boost the ideas that you really like: This is the list at the moment:
http://ideas.projectplace.com/status/103431-quality-backlog

Sort it on score to see what we will talk about. We basically go through as many of the top ranked quality ideas as we have time for in the meeting. Sometimes that will be three ideas and sometimes it will will be fifteen. It's greatly dependent of the nature of the idea. We also follow up on last meeting.

Monday 30 November 2009

Time for some more quality discussions

Tomorrow it's time for another quality meeting... We go through the top ranked ideas that have the status Quality Backlog. You can see the list here Quality Backlog List the ideas on score to see the probablility that we will talk about your favourite idea. Basically, we take them from the top and talk about as many as we can fit in the time for the meeting. Vote before 1 pm CET if you want to influence the ranking.

The Projectplace Queen of Bad Narration

I'm thinking about changing my job title. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, please check out the films in my YouTube channel. All of them are about Projectplace and things you can do. Some of them have narration - unfortunately.

I'll be back soon, maybe alreday tomorrow, with an update on Projectplace Ideas user of the month.

I'm also busy planning an update of Projectplace Ideas to a new platform. And thinking about a new theme of the month: Planning. How do you like it? You could even upload your own Projectplace Planner plans for people to vote on; now wouldn't that be fun?

Until later,
Karolina

What happens to the ideas I post? Ranking matters!

Hi,

Thanks for all the feedback:) You may have noticed that we do actually develop based on the feedback we receive from you. We get a lot of feedback and one of my jobs is to (at least mentally) divide them into the various tracks ideas can take in Projectplace:

1. Quality Backlog
The top ranked ideas with this status get discussed directly with our interface design team once a month. We will comment on these and tell you how/if we are thinking about this as a potential development.

2. Business Case
Business Cases are basically the argument for new development. Part of my job is to make sure that the highest ranking ideas with this status get a good business case written. Once it's written it will be read, pondered upon, investigated, and prioritised against other business cases. Business cases also come from other parts of the organisation.

3. Problem Backlog
What we in everyday speak call bugs. Problems that are due to our system not working the way it's supposed to. These are reported to a special tracking system and prioritised for fixing.

4. Support Issues
Support issues are problems that occur for individual users because of their specific system set-up. I usually recommend you to contact support directly to see what we can do to help you. If there is a good generic solution to this, I will usually post it as a comment for others to read.

5. Tips and Tricks
Sometimes it takes a while to figure out a new system. Or new functionality in a system that you've used for ages. I for one, still haven't figured out half of the functionality in most systems that I use. Ideas that end up with this status will have an explanation and usually a film in the comments. Please feel free to subscribe to my YouTube channel for a complete list of the tips and tricks films. Some are just test of problems people encounter and some are quite useful tips.

We might not be able to develop your idea straight away even though it's brilliant and we love it. But ranking matters, so use the link to your idea, share it and promote it. Comments matter aswell. They give us a clearer grasp of what the need is for this development. We want to make sure that we develop something that helps as many current and future users as possible to work in and manage their projects in a way that is delightful, fun and productive.

Cheers,
Karolina

New Release Projectplace: Thanks to all contributors at Projectplace Ideas

A new release of Projectplace should be here soon. In fact, I think our clever operations, development and web people are rolling it out as I'm typing. This one is extra exciting for me as community manager and in charge of Projectplace Ideas as the main improvements in this release have involved ideas from our users.

The first ideas that looks like being implemented in the new release are about colour in the Projectplace Planner:

and also colours in Documents

The colours you can choose for folders in Documents and in Projectplace Planner are the same which makes it easier to organise your project information.

Here's an example of what it could look like:

The other idea that will be implemented, although in beta rather than full release is support for Mac participants in our online meeting tool Netviewer:

A lot of people have asked and voted for this and we hope that the beta will work for most of you.

The new release will also include an update of the new visual interface which will then be in release candidate. The update will affect everyone who currently tests the beta and it would be great if you would like to keep testing and giving us your feedback :)

I hope that this release will be successful ! Keep telling us and each other what you like. Next week I would like everyone to vote for someone else's idea.

All the best,
Karolina

Motivation in the Credit Crunch

Motivating your staff is one of the most difficult and important challenges of the credit crunch. Insight Lab has put together a guide which gives specific tips to managers who want to get better at motivating their staff. The correlation between increased motivation and increased profit has been known for a long time but there are few guaranteed ways of maximising motivation.

American company ISR, International Survey Research has presented the answers from 650 000 emplyees in 50 global corporations and analysed the relationship between comittment and profit.

They identified four factors that affect employee comittment and company profit. One of which is career opportunities which gives nine per cent better profit than average.

A social environment that promotes collaboration and team spirit gives eight per cent better profit, while good communications give four per cent better profits and good management gives two per cent better profits.

Get tuned in to your employees' goals

In the autumn of 2008, Insight Lab asked Swedish managers to share their best tips for motivating staff. Amongst the tips, which have been collected and presented in a report, is the advice to be as personal when addressing a group as you are with an individual. Avoid talking in the third person when addressing a group. A good question to ask an employee is "How do you percieve your task?" or "What do you need to achieve?". These questions give managers insight into how well the employee understands their role and give the right support and coaching.

Benefit from the effects of group psychology

Another tip from Insight Lab is to have the goal of giving praise to someone in your team every day. Saying something positive about what a person has delivered or individual performance shows a genuine involvement from you. Start the day with a positive message and end the day by giving praise, even if it's only for a small detail.

Another tip is to give praise openly, for example in a meeting, to an employee who deservs it. Benefit from the effects of group psychology by giving negative news in small groups where everyone can ask questions and talk about their worries. Good news, on the other hand, should be presented to all employees. This way, the good vibes will be infectuous and affect as many as possible which on turn increases cohesion in the group.

By taking notes about what your staff tells you you make sure that nothing is left dangling. Thi also shows your staff that you care and that both big and small issues will be addressed. Use the internal communication channels to inform and not to influence opinion or for tilting the facts.

If you have to downsize, explain the background facts and verify that the company is doing the best they can for their staff considering the circumstances. When you have to save, don't try to push reduced benefits as if it was an improvement. Emphasise everyday encouragement and give each employee "5 seconds in the spotlight".

These are some of the tips that Swedish managers have shared for increased employee motivation.

Annelen Geretschläger originally published in Swedish in Dagens Ledarskap 2009-08-20...original article here)

Time to kick start the new year!

Ok, so the start of the new year (in this part of the world) is technically the 1st of January. But I would argue that the end of the summer holidays/start of the new school year feels much more like the sart of something new. Most people have their "main" vacation in the summer and come back to work in August/September with new energy and purpose. The summer holiday is like winter in nature, a time to rest and gather energy for the new growth period.

At Projectplace we will launch a whole new packaging of the product soon, for more information go here.

So happy new year! Relish in the sense of a fresh beginning and make sure you jot down the ideas that will inevitably spring up from the creativity and energy of a new season.

What a day; A golden opportunity!

Yesterday, and continuing today there are masses of new ideas and loads of activity in Projectplace Ideas. I am super busy trying to reply to everyone:) Take the opportunity when the activity is up to enter your idea, or comment/vote on someone else's; today, you have more say than ever before!

The Projectplace iPhone app is no 1 fee business app in Sweden! Thanks everyone who dowloaded and made the app such a success. There's a special category on Projectplace Ideas for the iPhone app. Please leave your feedback for the app there.

We're humbled and excited that so many people want to help us test the new visual interface (or are you all that desperate for an iPhone?) The beta was full after only 29 minutes!

Tomorrow I will announce this month's top contributor to Projectplace Ideas. Contributions that count are new ideas, votes on someone else's idea, comments and tags. But only while you're logged in. If you have left anonymous votes and comments, please log in and you will be asked to verify that they are made by you. That way I can see them and they will count towards your contribution. Status setting and planning for the summer

I am busy busy trying to set status for all the ideas that have dropped into Projectplace Ideas. I am also trying to do a job description so that I can have some holiday at some point;) Although I love my job there are times when I prefer to be inaccesssible.

The status explanations should hopefully tell you what to expect. As always the ranking of an idea is important, as the higest ranking ideas are the ones that we will look at the most. Don't forget to share the link to ideas you like.

What's up right now you ask?

Well right now we have released an external beta trial of the new visual interface for Projectplace. And the 150 people we needed singed up in less than 30 minutes. Fantastic! Right now the score is about 1200 people who singed up. I'll keep you posted on what's happening with the beta and who wins the iPhone for participating. Check out the latest on Projectplace Labs. If you're one of the lucky ones who get to participate in the beta, please don't forget to comment, post and vote over at Projectplace Ideas. And the Projectplace iPhone app is the no 1 free business app in Sweden, it's a good day!

Sometimes you just need closure

Since we started in December it's been an interesting time. We have had a lot of inspiring ideas, good feedback, both positive and negative and some good times time solving problems and explaining how to do things in Projectplace. Thanks to all of you who have contributed by giving feedback, commenting, voting or maybe just reading.

One of the things that upset a lot of people in the December release was the removal of the ”Send me a copy” when you send documents via e-mail from Projectplace. We have had 3 threads, with quite a few votes, where people have wanted to get this feature reintroduced and we have listened. The checkbox was reintroduced last week. And I was happy to close the following threads:

http://ideas.projectplace.com/feedbacks/255622-list-of-all-sent-e-mails

http://ideas.projectplace.com/feedbacks/224056-copy-sender-when-emailing

http://ideas.projectplace.com/feedbacks/205278-e-mail-copy-to-myself-e-post-kopia-till-mig-sjalv

Go to Projectplace Ideas to make sure your voice is heard, and don't forget to vote and comment on other people's ideas. If it's your first visit you can flip through all the ideas. Why not add the rss feed of Projectplace Ideas to your favourite rss reader. http://ideas.projectplace.com/xml/feedbacks That way you make sure you never miss anything new. You can also follow me on twitter http://twitter.com/ppideas.

This months special recognition goes to Holger Franke, he's a top contributor at Projectplace Ideas and someone who is not afraid to tell it like it is, thanks for giving me a nudge in the right direction.

PROJECTPLACE LAUNCHES IPHONE APPLICATION

Projectplace launces an iPhone version of their Project Management tool. The application is free to install and use and gives you access to documents, contacts and 500 MB storage space. The launch is part of Projectplace's strategy to provide a collaboration platform in the cloud for their users. The application will be developed according to user feedback.
Now, Projectplace users can search for and read documents, access meetings, issues and project milestones in their iPhone. Via a dynamic contact list you can call, text message or e-mail your project group. You can even use the GPS function to locate your colleagues.

- It is primarily the social functions from Projectplace that we have made available easily via an iPhone. The selection was made with people on the go in mind, people who need to get hold of a colleague, send a message or read up on a document before a meeting, says Peter Strömberg, resposible for Projectplace Labs

The application is released in English only and will be available for users on all of Projectplace's markets. User feedback will guide the future development of the application.

- Our strategic goal is to create a collaboration platform for our users in the cloud, explains Pelle Hjortblad, CEO of Projectplace. Projectplace Labs, a development platform where our users can share the latest product information and test new applications and functions, was launched already during Autumn 2008. We also have a user forum, Projectplace Ideas, where you can suggest new or changed functionality in our service, like the iPhone application.

The iPhone application is free of charge for all Projectplace users, even for users of Free – the free version of Projectplace - and is the first application where users get access to half a GB of free storage space. To install the application, search for Projectplace in the application store or go to www.projectplacelabs.com

iPhone, Lynx and more things that make me happy

When it rains, it pours:) The Projectplace iPhone App is finally approved and available for download from the app store. Download is free and available via iTunes or just by searching for Projectplace straight from your iPhone. Great news for Projectplace users and I know that a lot of you have been waiting for this opportunity.
Visit Projectplace Labs for more information.

We have also got a few people who have told us that they like the concept of Lynx. This makes me happy of course. I know that a lot of people contact us with big and complex project plans that they find cumbersome to update in Projectplace. My advice to you is; Try our Lynx and if you like it please tell us so in the Lynx category on Projectplace Ideas. Don't forget to vote for Lynx integration if you would like it.

Last months special thanks goes to Joachim Schirra, both for his many contributions on other people's ideas and for his own. Thanks Joachim! I hope you feel appreciated.

Until next time, stay well and good luck with your projects. What can we do to make you successful? Tell us at Projectplace Ideas and don't forget to read, comment and vote on other people's ideas.

Projectplace Ideas - collaboration is the only way forward

In December, Projectplace introduced a new way of getting feedback from our users through Projectplace Ideas.

Projectplace Ideas is a way of publically posting ideas that you have about features that you would like to see or change in Projectplace. But just as important as your inspiring ideas and feedback are the comments and votes that you add to other ideas. The process of innovation is very much a collaborative one, just look at the way the Nobel price is usually split between groups of scientists that have either worked together or simply evolved each other's ideas.

Aside: Yes, it could be considered sligthly conceited to compare an idea forum with the greatest scientific achievments. Then again, if you don't aim high you will never exceed your own expectations.

Every month I will acknowledge someone who has made my life as Community Manager happier, easier or generally better. This month's special thanks goes to Johannes Ortner who is the top contributor at Projectplace Ideas if you include votes and comments and has also added a photo. I like to see the people I talk to:)

Projectplace Ideas is a way for us to gauge roughly how big the interest is for a certain development/how big the percieved problem is for our users. This is important to prioritise when the ideas are endless and the resources finite. Sometimes we might even want you to contribute by asking about a specific area of Projectplace. Right now we have a category open about YAP. You don't know what YAP is? Faster than Excel and easier than Microsoft Project it's a new solution for task scheduling. Read more about it and test run the prototype at Projectplace Labs.

Our intital target was to get an average of around 100 hits a day when we started Projectplace Ideas. In hindsight this was a very moderate target. We now have about 300 visits to Projectplace Ideas every weekday. This makes me proud, proud to have such wonderful, engaging and inspirational users, but not satisfied.
